Amanda William Howard

August 16, 1905 - January 26, 2002

Amanda William "Willie" Howard, age 96, passed away on Sat., January 26, 2002, in the home of her son John Virgil Howard of Fort Worth, Texas. Willie was born on August 16, 1905, to Mollie Anderson and the late William David Anderson of Strawberry, Arkansas. She moved to Oklahoma with her mother, brothers and sisters at an early age. Willie graduated from Lindsay High School in 1924 and later earned a degree from East Central State Teachers College in Ada. She taught school at Hughes Consolidated, at Erin Springs, and at Lindsay. Willie married Pinkney Virgil Howard of Lindsay on December 24, 1926. Together Virgil and Willie operated a barber and beauty shop on Main Street, Lindsay, until WW II when Virgil enlisted in the Navy and Willie also joined the war effort. After the war Virgil and Willie were blessed with a son and moved to a farm west of Maysville to spend many happy years. Willie was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Lindsay. She was also active in the Womens Literary Club. She dearly loved her home state of Oklahoma and the Lindsay community. Willie is survived by her son John Virgil Howard and his wife, Jo Ellen Mantooth Howard; and by three grandchildren, William Virgil Howard, Amanda Jo Howard, and Jonna Beth Howard of Fort Worth, Texas. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at the First Christian Church in Lindsay with Rev. John Griffith and Rev. Scott Singleton officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ron Thornton, Mike Lawrence, Ted Lawrence, Bob Howard, Rick Howard, and Richard Bowen. Guy Garrett will serve as honorary pallbearer.
