Leonard Gordon Simmons, Jr.

Leonard Gordon "June" Simmons, Jr of Lindsay, Oklahoma passed from this life on Wednesday morning, October 20th, 2010 at his home at the age of 86. Leonard was born on September 3, 1924 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Leonard Gordon Simmons, Sr. and Arah Simmons. Leonard moved to the Lindsay area at the age of eighteen months. He attended school at Whitebead and Dibble. Leonard married Sarah Elvina Riley on November 6th, 1947 in Gainesville, Texas. He remained in Lindsay the rest of his life. Leonard was a member of the Church of God, and he was a member of the Masons. He served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army assigned to the tenth Mountain Infantry. Leonard worked as a tank truck driver in the oilfield, and he enjoyed gardening and carpentry. Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife Sarah Elvina (Riley) Simmons, three daughters, Kathlyn June Boykin and husband Don of Purcell, Oklahoma, Brenda Kay McKee and husband Kenneth of Lindsay, Oklahoma and Shirley Joyce Shamblin and husband Jamie of Vian, Oklahoma, and one son, David Royce Simmons and wife Linda of Lindsay, Oklahoma. He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Michael Don Coles of Washington, OK, Jennifer Moore of Elmore City, OK, Christopher Casey Coles of Carney, OK, Tricia Diane Tullis of North Platte, Nebraska, David Dwayne Simmons of Lindsay, OK, Angela Ronelle Cole of Pernell, OK, Amy Lorraine Coles of Lindsay, OK, Matthew Derek Layton of Ada, OK, Russell Clint Layton of Ada, OK, and Darrell Curt Layton of Stratford, OK, Mark Karns, Ricky Karns, Katerina Fuller, Promise Shamblin and Brent Boykin. Survivors also include thirty-one great-grandchildren; Grant, Jordon, Jake and McKenzie Coles, Riley and Hailey Griffin, Brittany and Cody Cole, Derek, Sydney, Kennedy, Andrew Charles, Jackson and Jocelyn Layton, Bryce and Bella Tullis, Davy and Zac Simmons, Barry Cramton, Christopher Estes, Tanner, Shelby, Hunter, Landyn, Dylan, Laynie and Dalton Karns, Shannon and Whitney Smith and Tiffany and Alan Boykin and one great-great grandson, Jacan Estes. Mr. Simmons was preceded in death by his father Leonard Gordon Simmons, Sr., his mother, Arah Lasters, one sister, Mertus Stroud, one granddaughter, Julie Ann McKee and one grandson, Kevin Kenneth McKee. Funeral services for Mr. Simmons are set for ten o?clock a.m. on Friday, October 22nd, 2010 at the Erin Springs Church of God in Erin Springs, Oklahoma with Rev. Ancil Simmons officiating and Pastor Brian Archer assisting. Interment will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Lindsay, Oklahoma with Rev. Greg Hatchett officiating.
