Bob Lee Burkes

Bob Burkes passed away at the age of 68 on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 as the result of an accident He was born on December 6, 1939 in Grady County to Charles and Lou Marie Burkes. Bob graduated from Lindsay High School. He married Sarah Sims at the First Baptist Church in Lindsay, Oklahoma on June 25, 1960. He was always a country boy at heart. Bob was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lindsay and belonged to the Masons and the Historical Society. He spent most of his days doing what he loved most, raising cattle and working his land. He did take occasional breaks from farming, but never got away from his roots. Sporting his best pair of overalls, he loved to go and search for antiques. Whether on the side of the road or at a local auction, Bob saw value in things others did not. In addition, he also enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors. Most recently, he and his wife Sarah have enjoyed time together traveling with Christian companions from Lindsay and various parts of Oklahoma. Those who will cherish Bob?s memory the most include his wife, Sarah Sims Burkes, his son Robert Lee Burkes II and wife Debbie, and is daughter Sharlotte Burkes, all of Lindsay, Oklahoma In addition, Bob leaves behind grandchildren Randy Whalen and wife Norma of Brownsville, Texas, Kelly Brown and husband Jason of Lindsay, Oklahoma, and Terri Whalen of Dallas, Texas. The joys of Bob?s life were his great grandchildren and farming apprentices: Kell, Kaleb, and Kotton Brown of Lindsay, Oklahoma, and Nikki, Randy, and Austin Whalen of Brownsville, Texas. Bob is preceded in death by his in-laws, Hal and Lois Sims and his parents and two sisters, Emma Jean Spies and Charlene Nichols. Bob is survived by sisters Loretta Olson and Laveta Lutomski and brother Marshall Burkes. Bob was a simple man who valued his land and hard work, served his community, and wholeheartedly loved his family. Furthermore, Bob always had a huge smile, a generous heart, and a willingness to help those in need. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. Services for Mr. Burkes will be on Friday April 18, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Lindsay. Interment will be at Green Hill Cemetery in Lindsay.
