Funeral services for Vera B. Burkes, 94, will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at First Baptist Church, Lindsay, Oklahoma with the Rev. Monty Baggett officiating. Mrs. Burkes died Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at her home in Lindsay, OK. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery under the direction of B.G. Boydston Funeral Home. She was born February 11, 1909, in rural Garvin county, to A. John and Rebecca Jane (Garrison) Nelson. Her father was born in Sweden and her mother was born in Pennington Gap, Va. Vera grew up near Lindsay and attended Lindsay public school through the twelfth grade. The First Baptist Church, Lindsay, was a focal point of her life. She was baptized and joined this church on April 4, 1924. She was a member for 69 years. On October 4, 1930 she married Boyd B. Burkes in the First Baptist Church, Lindsay, with Rev. Anson Campbell officiating. He preceded her in death on July 5, 1998, they had been married 67 years. In their early married life Mr. & Mrs. Burkes worked together on their family farm, located South of Lindsay. Later they moved to town where she was a homemaker . Mrs. Burkes invested a great deal of her life and energy in serving the church which was so dear to her. She was quick to host luncheons for pastors and friends, organize chuch meals and provide snacks for vacation bible school. She loved her church and she loved her Lord. The light of her husband, children, grandchildren and great - grandchildren. She loved them very much and cared for them all very well. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: Richard and Kathryn Burkes , Lindsay; four grandchildren: Christie Woodson and her husband, Dr. Ronald Woodson, Lawton; Michael Burkes and his wife, Lorrie of California; Kanda Vince and her husband, Tony, of Ohio; and Eric Burkes of Oklahoma City. Three step - grandchildren, Rozetta Clason and her husband, Fred, of Lindsay; Sharonda Gracia and her husband, David of Moore; and Laronda King of Lindsay. She is also survived by a host of great - grandchild, all of whom were very dear to her. She was especially close to her oldest great - grandchild, Reagan Woodson. Also special to her were family members: Harold Sinclair, Mary Sue Duncan and Dorice Burkes as well as many other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd B. Burkes, her son, Bill J. Burkes, four brothers who lived to maturity, three brothers who died as small children, two sisters who lived to maturity, and one who died as a small child. She had many special life long friends who preceded her in death. Memorial contributions may be made to Lindsay First Baptist Church Memorial Fund or Valley Hospice of Pauls Valley.
